Exterior: Audi’s entrant into the sports sedan segment, the S4 is an excellent example of an everyday family supercar. Based on the popular A4 model, in either four door or five door variants, the S4 is understated. Only the most knowledgeable car fans will be able to tell the difference between an S4 and an A4 from this generation. Exterior differences include slightly more aggressive from and rear fascias, bigger wheels, optional chrome side-view mirror caps, xenon lights and of course S badging. Even with these subtle cues, this is the ultimate cheap supercar.
Interior: The interior is the perfect combination of luxury and sport. Leather covers most of the surfaces along with wood or carbon fiber accents. As a supercar, the car is oriented around the driver with large, easy-to-read gauges and a sculpted steering wheel. As a sedan, there are three seats in the back, however leg room is slightly limited and thus two adults will feel snug in the back seat. Despite this however, the S4 does boast a roomy trunk that has more than enough room for baggage.
Driving: Because this is a family supercar, it is very easy to drive around town. At low RPMs it is quiet and tame, however as soon as its thrown into curves or has its throttle mashed on the highway the true nature of this car comes out. In almost any gear the power is immense with little turbo lag or whine. Of course the engineers at Audi did more than add twin turbos to this car, and all their work is evident in the smooth and consistent performance of this sports sedan.
The suspension is soft enough to handle city driving, however it is certainly stiff enough to handle hard back road driving. Audi’s Quattro all wheel drive system is wonderful in keeping the car planted in the turns. In fact, with the addition of snow tires, this car could even be used as a winter car in all climates. The brakes are extremely responsive and can save the driver from any situation. Combine these with Audi’s excellent Electronic Stability Control, and this is one supercar that anyone can drive.
